Me, Mother of Four who Struggles to Feed Her Family Healthy Foods
You are what you eat. I believe that wholeheartedly. That said, I have a long ways to go in my own diet and in feeding my family of six.
I try to take small steps. Five years ago, I was a smoker and a single mom of two young kids who would find herself in the McDonald’s drive through more times than I care to admit.
These days, I am ‘smoke-free’ and far better at limiting sugar and processed foods for myself and my family, but I still find feeding my family of six to be my most overwhelming challenge.
I see posts of friends on Facebook who consider cooking therapy. I wish! It is a daily struggle for me to come up with, cook, provide and encourage my family to eat as healthy as we can: one that I fail at frequently. As my kids get older (the youngest is 21 months old), I am hoping it will get easier.
Meanwhile, I have friends through Holistic Moms Network who are terrific influences, inspiration and resources on my journey. Below, one of the leaders of HMN, Kelly Richards Brubaker, who is also a Holistic Nutrition Consultant for Tranquility Spa and Wellness Center in Saint Charles, Illinois, provides a truly inspiring story about her friend Susan’s battle with cancer:
My dear friend Susan was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in February of 2012 (It had spread to her adrenal gland and lymph nodes.) The doctors did not give her much hope at the time. I believe they told her she would have 12-18 months.
Well, Susan did not let cancer defeat her. She completely changed her diet and basically started eating an 80- 90%. raw based diet. She was able to be put on an oral chemo.
After six weeks on this nutrition program along with the oral chemo, her test results were phenomenal. The tumor on her adrenal gland reduced by 70%, the tumor on her lung reduced by 50%, and the cancer could not longer be detected in her lymph nodes.
But the doctors really fought her on her diet because Susan lost a lot of weight, and they wanted her to put some of it back on to help her fight the effects of the chemo and to ‘help’ with the other traditional treatments.
The saddest part of this to me was that they were talking about junk food to gain weight, not healthy foods. Because Susan was eating the healthiest foods on earth…WHOLE FOODS!
She was eating mainly raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds at the beginning. She would not listen to the doctors, and quite frankly, in my opinion, it probably saved her life.
She continued this way for months and continued to prove her doctors wrong. She also did a lot of energy healing and praying.
She rose above this diagnosis and started campaigning for the American Lung Association. Before they met Susan, there wasn’t a mention on their website about non-smokers lung cancer . (Susan has never smoked a day in her life.)
Susan has personally raised thousands of dollars for research. They have made videos of her, and she has become a true leader against lung cancer. Did you know that lung cancer is the number one killer of all cancers? I know I didn’t.
Fast forward to the fall of 2013. Susan was still doing amazing. Her doctors could not believe it. She was at a point where the cancer was no longer detectable. She met with her oncologist and surgeons, and they wanted to remove what was left of the tumors.
On December 26th, she had an adrenal gland removed. Then just a few days ago, she had a part of her lung removed. Her oncologist called her a few days ago to go over the pathology report on her lung.
She told Susan there were no cancer cells found at all.
Her oncologist actually said the words, “you are cancer-free”.
She immediately took her off of the oral chemo (which she was originally told she would have to take for the rest of her life.)
I am sharing this story with you so that if you or anyone you know gets diagnosed with cancer…no matter what stage…THERE IS HOPE!
The first step that must be done immediately is a diet change. No matter how healthy the person with cancer thinks they are…their diet has to change.
It is extreme…but we are talking about life or death. I helped Susan with her diet and I can help others get started too.
We should all get started before we get diagnosed.
Below are two books that helped me when I went to Susan with this “crazy” idea that I have read about so many times…reversing cancer. It is possible.

Thanks, Kelly for sharing this inspirational story. I know it has given me added incentive on my journey to more healthy eating.
